Düsseldorf halts opera house construction

Düsseldorf will not be getting a new opera house after all. Mayor Stephan Keller (CDU) announced on Friday that plans for the construction have been halted. Instead, the current location of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein will be upgraded to the point where it can continue operating.

Keller explained that the decision to cancel the new building was anything but easy for him. "However, given the growing deficit in our budget, even painful decisions are unavoidable." The state capital is facing major financial challenges.

The mayor stated that the administration as a whole is obligated to identify and implement potential savings. This ultimately includes even pet projects. "The opera was and remains one such pet project for me," he said. At the same time, he added, it is his duty to ensure the financial autonomy of the state capital.

Specialist engineers identified numerous structural, technical, and functional deficiencies in the opera house on Heinrich-Heine-Allee. The building, constructed in 1875 as a municipal theater, was deemed unsuitable for a sustainable operatic operation. Since October 2017 alone, more than ten million euros have been invested in repairs.

Instead of renovating, the city initially opted for a new building on the existing site. This new building was to house not only the opera house but also the municipal Clara Schumann Music School and the music library of the city libraries. In November 2025, an architectural competition selected four winning designs.

The existing building will now be renovated after all. These measures were already planned to ensure continued operation until a possible reopening, Keller said. Games will therefore continue. However, many of the improvements that a new building would have offered will have to be forgone.

The work is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027. At the same time, studies will be conducted to determine how opera productions can be maintained in the building beyond the 2030s.
