Pianist Nehring receives Sir Jeffrey Tate Prize

Polish pianist Szymon Nehring will receive this year's Sir Jeffrey Tate Prize from the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. The 30-year-old will be presented with the award at a concert with the orchestra on June 7th at Hamburg's Laeiszhalle, the orchestra announced on Thursday. The prize, endowed with €10,000, has been awarded every two years since 2020 to exceptionally talented young musicians.

Szymon Nehring

Born in Kraków, Nehring has enjoyed a close relationship with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra for many years. He has also performed with orchestras such as the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony, and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. In 2017, he became the first Pole to win the International Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv. He had previously been a finalist in the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

The Sir Jeffrey Tate Prize commemorates the British conductor (1943–2017), who led the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 2009 until his death. The prize was established by Annegret and Claus-G. Budelmann. A jury including Artistic Director Daniel Künel and the founders decides on the recipient. Previous winners include the British violist Timothy Ridout (2020), the Spanish pianist Martín García García (2022), and the Portuguese accordionist João Barradas (2024).
