Festival "Sinopoliana" commemorates Giuseppe Sinopoli

To mark the 25th anniversary of Giuseppe Sinopoli's death, Germany and Italy will commemorate the world-renowned conductor and composer with concerts, lectures, and an exhibition. The "Sinopoliana" series of events will take place from April to November in Berlin, Dresden, Rome, and Venice, as announced by the coordinators in Berlin on Thursday. This interdisciplinary project is supported by the Italian government through the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin to honor Sinopoli's central role in the artistic and intellectual dialogue between the two countries.

Sinopoli died on April 20, 2001, at the age of 54, from a heart attack suffered during a performance of Verdi's "Aida" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Born in Venice in 1946, he completed medical studies alongside his musical training. In addition to his appearances in major musical centers such as Vienna and Bayreuth, he was chief conductor of several orchestras. After conducting the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Philharmonia Orchestra London, he led the Staatskapelle Dresden .

"My father possessed the great ability to bring music, medicine, archaeology, Central European culture, and psychology into dialogue with one another," said his son, Marco Sinopoli. "'Sinopoliana' is not only meant to commemorate him, but also to create a space where his vision continues to live on."

The festival opens on the anniversary of his death with a concert in Berlin's Meistersaal. His widow, Silvia Cappellini Sinopoli, will perform his own works as well as those by Ferruccio Busoni, Alban Berg, Gustav Mahler, and Daniela Fantechi. In addition to a chamber concert at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (June 29), a concert by the Philharmonia Orchestra London is planned at the Berlin Philharmonie (October 15). In Dresden, the musician Marco Sinopoli and his group Extradiction will bridge the gap between Maurice Ravel and contemporary jazz (September 29).

The program is complemented by a photo exhibition in Rome and Berlin featuring archival materials from the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Ricordi music archive in Milan, which belongs to the Bertelsmann media group. A study day will take place at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome on October 26, followed in November by a discussion event and a symphony concert at the Teatro La Fenice.
