About the interview

Hamburg State Opera temporarily moves into a tent

The Hamburg State Opera will temporarily relocate to a circus tent at the end of the upcoming season. From May 22 to July 4, 2027, opera, ballet, and orchestra will perform in the "Kuppel Hamburg" (Hamburg Dome). This was announced by Artistic Director Tobias Kratzer on Tuesday at the presentation of the 2026/27 season. The reason for the move is the renovation of the orchestra pit in the opera house.

Press conference Hamburg State Opera

The opera company is planning nine premieres for the upcoming season. These include the world premiere of the family opera "Störtebecker," which will take place in the "Kuppel Hamburg" (Hamburg Dome). The State Opera has also announced the "Opera and Animation" festival and a weekend of political music theater as special events. The ballet company will also present two premieres. The Philharmonic State Orchestra, under General Music Director Omer Meir Wellber, will focus its program on the Beethoven Year 2027, featuring ten Philharmonic concerts, the second edition of the "Die Blaue Woche" (The Blue Week) festival, and other special concerts.

Even before the end of his first season as artistic director, Kratzer drew a positive conclusion: "People in Hamburg are going to the opera again," he said. The season has "already exceeded all our expectations." Robert Schumann's oratorio "Das Paradies und die Peri" at the season opening and the world premiere of Olga Neuwirth's "Monster's Paradise" were resounding successes with record attendance. Ticket sales to those under 30 had increased by more than 40 percent.
