German Music Competition 2026 selects two prize winners

The German Music Competition (DMW) prize this year goes to two soloists. The winners are Munich cellist Constantin Heise and Freiburg clarinetist Joscha Kremsler, as the organizers announced in Bonn on Thursday. The composition prize is awarded to Pedro Rosenthal Campuzano for his Sonata for Solo Violin.

The prize winners receive prize money, are accepted into the German Music Competition's concert funding program, and will record their own CD for the Genuin label. In addition, 15 soloists and a string quartet will be awarded scholarships, which include concert bookings. Two prize-winners' concerts will take place on Friday and Saturday.

The competition, in its 50th edition, was open to entries in the categories of accordion, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, voice, double bass, cello, ensembles in free formation, string quartet, piano accompaniment, and composition. Ninety-one soloists and six ensembles performed before the jury in Cologne and Bonn.

The German Music Competition has been organized by the German Music Council since 1975. The 39 categories change annually, with usually 13 being offered. For the prize winners and scholarship recipients, it serves as the starting point for long-term support programs of the German Music Council, which include, among other things, the production of debut CDs and the arrangement of concert appearances.
