Deutsche Oper Berlin appoints new chorus director

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has appointed Marco Medved as its new chorus director. The Milan native will take up the post in August 2026, the opera house announced on Tuesday. He succeeds Jeremy Bines from Northern Ireland, who is leaving after nine years in the same position to join the Stuttgart State Opera.

Marco Medved

Medved was chorus master of the Tyrolean Festival Erl (2008-2013), from 2011 to 2012 also at the South Tyrol Festival in Toblach, and in the 2012/13 season at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing. From 2013 to 2015 he worked at the Cologne Opera, initially as chorus assistant and then as deputy chorus master. Subsequently he was chorus director of the Bonn Opera and from 2024 at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, southern Italy.

With Medved, the Deutsche Oper Berlin has found an experienced and highly competent chorus director, said the designated artistic director Aviel Cahn. The Milanese will inspire the chorus singers and, together with them, bring extraordinary performances to the stage. "He is a seasoned expert on the Italian repertoire and, in his many years in Germany and at the Tyrolean Festival, has also been able to deepen his knowledge of the German repertoire," Cahn added.

Medved described it as "a great honor to be able to lead this multi-award-winning choir with its broad, excellently rehearsed repertoire from the coming season and to enrich it with my ideas and experience." He said he was excited about the cultural metropolis of Berlin "with its outstanding musical offerings, to which contributing is a great professional incentive for me.".

Outgoing choir director Bines will still oversee the choir's rehearsal for the first new production of the 2026/27 season. Cahn will present the program for his first season next week.
