Japanese Order awarded to conductor Paavo Järvi
Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi will receive one of Japan's highest honors, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. The Japanese Embassy in Estonia announced this on Wednesday. Järvi has made numerous contributions to musical exchange between Japan and Estonia, as well as to the development of musical culture in Japan. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Estonia later this year.

Paavo Järvi
Born in Tallinn in 1962, Järvi was chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan from 2015 to 2022. During his tenure, he significantly contributed to raising the orchestra's musical quality, it was stated. He also expanded the NHKSO's repertoire to include Nordic music, works by Estonian composers, and 20th-century music. Even after his retirement in 2022, Järvi remains active in the Japanese music scene as conductor emeritus.
The Order of the Rising Sun has been awarded by the Japanese government since 1875. The award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through exceptional achievements in various fields of society. Foreign nationals are awarded it for significant contributions to fostering friendship and good relations with Japan. Foreign conductors who have received the order include Wolfgang Sawallisch (1986), Herbert von Karajan (1989), Mstislav Rostropovich (2001), and Herbert Blomstedt (2019).
