The artistic director of the Dortmund Opera, Heribert Germeshausen, will remain in office for another five years. As the Dortmund Theatre announced on Tuesday, the Dortmund City Council has approved a contract extension with Germeshausen until July 31, 2033.

Managing Director Tobias Ehinger will also remain with the theater until 2033. The contract with Andreas Gruhn, Artistic Director of the Children's and Youth Theater, has been extended until July 31, 2028.

With the contract extensions, the city is "relying on people who will shape this house with competence, passion and a strong set of values," said Dortmund's mayor and head of cultural affairs, Andreas Kalouti (CDU).

Germeshausen, 55, expressed his delight at the trust placed in him and the opportunity to continue along the path he had embarked upon at the Dortmund Opera. "Opera is an art form of powerful emotions, strong imagery, and existential questions – and precisely for this reason, it can unleash tremendous contemporary power. In Dortmund, we have demonstrated in recent years that an opera house can be simultaneously steeped in tradition, inquisitive, and open to the city," emphasized Germeshausen, who was born in Bad Kreuznach and has headed the Dortmund opera company since the 2018/19 season.
