Basel Sinfonietta extends contract with chief conductor Engel
Titus Engel will remain chief conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta for another five years. His contract has been extended until the end of the 2030/31 season, the orchestra announced on Wednesday. Since taking up his post in 2023, the Zurich native (born in 1975) has significantly shaped the Sinfonietta's artistic direction and led it to great success. The contract extension ensures the ensemble's continued ability to perform contemporary music at the highest level.

Engel explained that he was very much looking forward to continuing his collaboration with the musicians, who had become very dear to him. "The Basel Sinfonietta is a unique orchestra that is always ready to explore boundaries and discover new things with great energy and precision, and therefore it is a perfect fit for me," he said.
Founded in 1980, the Basel Sinfonietta is a symphonic orchestra specializing in contemporary music. According to its own statements, it has presented more than 240 world and national premieres to date. Until 2016, the ensemble worked exclusively with guest conductors before appointing Baldur Brönnimann as its first principal conductor. Titus Engel the position in 2023.
