Turchetta will become Coburg's General Music Director

Tommaso Turchetta will be the new General Music Director of the Coburg State Theatre. The Italian will take up the post at the start of the 2026/27 season, the city of Coburg announced on Monday. He succeeds Daniel Carter, who is moving to Weimar to become Music Director of the German National Theatre and the Staatskapelle.

Introducing Tommaso Turchetta (M.)

Turchetta was the express preferred candidate of the State Theatre Orchestra, said Coburg's Mayor Dominik Sauerteig (SPD). "With him, we are getting a conductor who has already demonstrated his musical quality and versatility at renowned opera houses."

For the past three years, Turchetta served as First Kapellmeister at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. "I am greatly looking forward to my time in Coburg, to an adventure full of music, inspiring encounters, and cultural diversity," explained the Naples-born conductor.

Turchetta studied composition, piano, and conducting in Italy. He then completed postgraduate studies in orchestral conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He furthered his training as a vocal coach and répétiteur at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan. In the 2017/2018 season, Turchetta was engaged as a vocal coach with conducting duties at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre in Görlitz. From 2018, he worked at the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck, initially as Kapellmeister and from 2020 as First Kapellmeister, before moving to Essen.
