The Vienna State Opera unveiled its 29th "Iron Curtain" on Wednesday. For the 2026/27 season, the jury selected a work by the Austrian painter Herbert Brandl, who died in 2025.

With its temporary "Iron Curtain," the art association "museum in progress" has been transforming the fire wall of the Vienna State Opera into an exhibition space since 1998. For one season each, works by artists such as Kara Walker, Giulio Paolini, Cy Twombly, Tauba Auerbach, John Baldessari, Cao Fei, and most recently El Anatsui, have been on display.
The 176 square meter pictures are attached to the fire wall of the opera stage with magnets and can be viewed by the audience before and after the performances as well as during the breaks for an entire season.
