The Mainz State Theatre has been named "Opera House of the Year 2026." This was the decision of 40 critics from the magazine "Opernwelt." The four-genre theatre impressed with a "dramaturgically successful and bold program," the magazine announced on Friday. Furthermore, it demonstrates "artistic excellence and political responsibility," for example, with its performance of two works by Jewish composers.

Claus Guth received the "Director of the Year" award for his interpretations of the rarely performed opera "Scylla et Glaucus" by French composer Jean-Marie Leclair and Brett Dean's "Of One Blood." The Australian composer's work was also named "World Premiere of the Year.".

The Russian soprano Elena Stikhina for her portrayal of Joan of Arc in Tchaikovsky's "The Maid of Orleans." The title "Singer of the Year" goes to the American baritone Michael Spyres for his performances as Walther von Stolzing and Siegmund.

The "Orchestra of the Year" and "Conductor of the Year" awards go to the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra and Thomas Guggeis, both based in the magazine "Opernwelt." The "Choir of the Year" is the Choir of the Dutch National Opera and Ballet in Amsterdam.
