Chief conductor Rattle extends his contract with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Sir Simon Rattle will remain chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for another five years. As the broadcaster announced on Thursday, the British conductor has extended his contract until 2033. This is excellent news for the BR, its audience, and the international music world, explained Director General Katja Wildermuth.

Rattle shapes the orchestra and choir with artistic brilliance, passion, and tireless spirit of discovery, said Wildermuth. "At the same time, he is deeply committed to inspiring young people in particular with music and thereby enabling them to participate in cultural life." In doing so, he not only strengthens the international reputation of both ensembles but also their mission to bring music to the heart of society.

The 71-year-old Rattle became the sixth chief conductor in the history of the BRSO in 2023, following Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelik, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons. He loves the musicians and singers, "and I have never been happier," he said upon his contract extension.
