Music manager Madeleine Landlinger will be the new artistic director of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. The native of Upper Austria was unanimously elected by the entire team, it was announced at her presentation on Saturday. She will take up the post on November 1st. Her contract runs for five years.

The new artistic director succeeds Lucius Hemmer, who was dismissed by the board of the sponsoring association in May after 23 years in office. His contract actually runs until 2032, but according to media reports, Hemmer has filed a lawsuit against his dismissal with the labor court.

"With the appointment of Madeleine Landlinger, the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra combines its musical tradition with a clear vision for the future," explained chief conductor Jonathan Darlington. "Her experience from various renowned orchestral and cultural institutions, her international network, and her passion for new forms of music education offer the best prerequisites for further advancing the orchestra's development and setting new trends."

The trained soprano and flautist Landlinger began her management career as managing director of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the Young German Philharmonic. Later, she was, among other things, artistic director of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn and artistic director of "Jeunesse - Musical Youth of Austria" and most recently artistic director of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.

Landlinger said she was very much looking forward to leading the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra as its artistic director and shaping its future programmatically with a fresh perspective. She was enthusiastic about the orchestra's diverse musical and performance culture. "The plan for a strong participatory culture motivates me. I consider this an important, innovative step towards a modern orchestral culture," she emphasized.
