Study: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra generates billions in value

The Berlin Philharmonic has a hypothetical value of two to three billion euros. This is the result of a study published on Tuesday by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The management consultancy conducted the first systematic examination of the orchestra's cultural, social, and economic impact.

The label "expensive, elitist, niche" often attached to classical music has been refuted by the Berlin Philharmonic, explained study co-author Benjamin Desalm. "They are an efficient cultural enterprise and an institution with considerable economic impact, and have been for more than 140 years."

The Berlin Philharmonic not only employs staff but also commissions local service providers and attracts an audience that boosts the city's hotel, restaurant, and transportation sectors. As a result, the orchestra generates a return of up to three euros for every euro of public funding it receives, according to the study.

In Berlin alone, around 250,000 people attend the Philharmonic's concerts each year. The ensemble has already performed in more than 50 countries. According to the study, its share of international media coverage of German cultural institutions is 32 percent. This figure is surpassed only by the Goethe-Institut (39 percent). With 3.1 million followers, it is the world's leading orchestra with the widest reach on social media.

The orchestra's technical innovation also contributes to this, as it has used and further developed new media from an early stage. "For us, this is a central part of our mission: to make music of the highest caliber that is accessible beyond the concert hall," said Olaf Maninger, principal cellist and media director of the Berlin Philharmonic.

The study further stated that the orchestra's education and outreach program promotes cultural participation regardless of social background. The special concerts, workshops, and projects for children, teenagers, and adults attracted around 50,000 participants in 2025, almost twice as many as in 2023. In addition, the ensemble supports young musicians preparing for international careers through its Karajan Academy.

The work of the Berlin Philharmonic impressively demonstrates what culture can contribute to society, summarized Alexander Roos, also a co-author of the study. "Top-tier culture is not a luxury that one can afford or not," he emphasized. Through its powerful impact, it creates points of identification, acts as an ambassador in the world, and generates sustainable, measurable added value.
