Basel Chamber Orchestra
In its 30 years of existence, the Basel Chamber Orchestra has developed into one of the leading chamber orchestras on the international music scene. Today, invitations to the most important concert halls and festivals of the European classical music scene are as much a part of the orchestra's agenda as its own concert series in Basel. Numerous CD recordings on renowned classical labels such as Sony, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Warner Classics, and OehmsClassics attest to the excellent quality of the Basel ensemble.
The Basel Chamber Orchestra prefers to perform under the musical direction of its own concertmasters, and the Basel ensemble enjoys a particularly fruitful collaboration with its Principal Guest Conductor, Giovanni Antonini. The highlight of the collaboration with Antonini is the Beethoven cycle, which the orchestra and the Italian Baroque specialist worked on for over ten years. The recording of Symphonies 1-8 has already been released by Sony. The recording of Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4 was awarded the ECHO Klassik prize as "Ensemble of the Year 2008." Under Giovanni Antonini, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, alternating with the Italian ensemble "Il Giardino Armonico," will perform and record all 107 symphonies of Joseph Haydn by 2032.
Furthermore, the orchestra maintains close ties with conductors such as Trevor Pinnock, Heinz Holliger, Paul Goodwin, and Mario Venzago . The list of soloists who have performed with the Basel Chamber Orchestra is distinguished: Emmanuel Pahud, Sol Gabetta, Andreas Scholl, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Matthias Goerne, Sabine Meyer, Angela Hewitt, Renaud Capuçon, Thomas Zehetmair, Sandrine Piau, and many more.
The orchestra members are also deeply committed to various projects in the field of musical education and support for young musicians. Concerts in chamber music settings complement the diverse artistic activities in the city and region of Basel.
The 2015/2016 season begins with performances of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" conducted by Trevor Pinnock at the Augusta Raurica Theatre. With Klaus Maria Brandauer as narrator, the musicians will perform at venues including the Dresden Frauenkirche, the KKL Luzern, and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. Concert tours will take the orchestra with Sir András Schiff and Heinz Holliger to the renowned "George Enescu" Festival in Bucharest, with Sol Gabetta to Australia, and with Daniel Hope to South America. The Basel Chamber Orchestra also looks forward to collaborating with Franco Fagioli, Renaud Capuçon, Andreas Scholl, Hélène Grimaud, Kristian Bezuidenhout, and many others. The core classical repertoire, including symphonies by Schubert, Haydn, and Beethoven, as well as Mozart's piano concertos, is featured alongside Baroque programs with cantatas by Bach, arias and concertos by Handel and Lully, and violin concertos from the 17th-century Bolognese school. Contemporary works by Heinz Holliger, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Toru Takemitsu, along with the world premiere of a commissioned work for solo violin and strings by the Swiss composer Stefan Wirth, complete the upcoming season's program.
Clariant International Ltd. has been the presenting sponsor of the Basel Chamber Orchestra since January 2013.
