Camerata Bern
has quickly developed into a world-renowned chamber orchestra.
All of its members are outstanding soloists. Their playing, under the artistic direction of Antje Weithaas , as well as with various guest soloists (Erich Höbarth, Alexander Janiczek, Carolin Widmann, Kolja Blacher), is characterized by a subtle and absolutely homogeneous sound, freshness, and exceptional stylistic assurance across the entire repertoire, from the Baroque era to the present day.
These outstanding qualities led to collaborations with numerous internationally renowned artists such as Heinz Holliger, András Schiff, Vadim Repin , Alexander Lonquich, Amandine Beyer, Jörg Widmann , Sabine Meyer , Tabea Zimmermann , Tine Thing Helseth, Bernd Glemser, Benjamin Schmid, Xavier De Maistre , Christian Gerhaher, Andrei Korobeinikov, Paul Meyer , Marie Luise Neunecker, Vesselina Kasarova, Aurèle Nicolet, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Maurice André, Bruno Canino, Radu Lupu, Peter Serkin, Gidon Kremer, Nathan Milstein, Boris Pergamenshikov, Narciso Yepes, Pepe Romero, Barbara Hendricks, Peter Schreier, Jan Vogler , Reinhold Friedrich , Leonidas Kavakos, Angelika Kirchschlager, and others.
The Camerata Bern has toured extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, South Asia, and the Far East. Australia and Japan. The band's LP and CD recordings for DG/Archiv, DECCA, Denon, ERATO, Berlin Classics, Novalis, Philips, Claves, ECM, and CAvi have won numerous international awards, including the German Record Critics' Award, the Grand Prix du Disque, the Record Critics Award, the Record Academy Prize, and the Echo Klassik '97 Award from the German Phono Academy. CAvi Music released their latest production in 2012, featuring Antje Weithaas and works by Beethoven.
Recently, the CAMERATA BERN has performed at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Sala São Paulo, the Teatro Solis in Montevideo, Victoria Hall in Geneva, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Cervantino Festival in Mexico, and Wartburg Castle in Eisenach.
Since 2010, the CAMERATA BERN has made a significant contribution to music education for children through concerts in schools throughout the Canton of Bern. The project "Concert Yourselves, Children" is part of the "Education and Culture" program of the Bern Cantonal Department of Education and has reached approximately 7,000 children to date, primarily in the rural regions of the canton.
In 2013, to mark its 50th anniversary, the Camerata Bern received fourteen string instruments modeled on Baroque instruments as a gift from the thirteen Bernese guilds, the Burgergemeinde (citizens' corporation), and the Hans and Verena Krebs Foundation. In a new concert series, the Camerata Bern is further exploring historically informed performance practice and regularly presents concerts using period instruments.
In the 2010-11 season, the Camerata Bern co-produced the full-length program "Flight of Gravity" with the ballet company of the Bern City Theatre. The choreography by Cathy Marston, set to music by Martinů, Tartini, Silvestrov, and Penderecki, enjoyed ten successful performances. With the same ballet ensemble, the CAMERATA BERN co-produced the program "Hexenhatz" (Witch Hunt) in spring 2013, featuring Italian Baroque music, and performed it on period instruments.
In Bern, the CAMERATA BERN presents its own concert series, including matinee and subscription concerts at the Zentrum Paul Klee, the Conservatorium, and the Kulturcasino. The success of these concerts with music lovers in Bern, throughout Switzerland, and internationally underscores the CAMERATA BERN's significance as a musical ambassador for the cultural city of Bern and a leading contributor to the Swiss music scene.
