About the interview

Zurich Bach Choir

The Zurich Bach Choir is one of Switzerland's most prestigious and renowned concert choirs. While its singers don't make a living from music, they bring it to life in their daily work, demonstrating that choral music can be performed at the highest level even by amateurs. Founded in 1947, the choir's original mission was to cultivate the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, a goal it established under the direction of Albert E. Kaiser and Bernhard Henking. Peter Eidenbenz, who shaped the Zurich Bach Choir for over 40 years, adapted the musical repertoire to the demands of contemporary concert choirs, performing nearly all the major choral works of the 19th and 20th centuries. Andreas Reize took over as director in 2011 with Georg Friedrich Handel's "Israel in Egypt" and has since been rehearsing a wide variety of works with the choir, giving due prominence to a cappella singing. The Zurich Bach Choir has collaborated with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and the Tonhalle Society on numerous occasions . Further collaborations have taken place with the Sinfonietta Basel, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra , the Musikkollegium Winterthur , the Collegium Musicum Luzern, and the two period instrument ensembles Capriccio Basel and the cantus firmus consort . Rehearsals are held every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. in the auditorium of the Kantonsschule Hohe Promenade.
