program
We're opening the doors! The opening celebration of the Musikkollegium Winterthur isn't confined to the Stadthaus (City Hall), but extends far beyond its walls. Various city institutions are participating: A pre-concert by the Stadtmusik Winterthur (Winterthur City Band) will showcase the city's incredibly diverse and high-caliber amateur music scene. And what better way to embrace the subtly woven theme of "Nature" this season than with a guided tour of Winterthur's garden city, a walk exploring "Biodiversity in the City" (both in collaboration with the House of Winterthur), or a clean-up event led by MyBluePlanet, Winterthur's climate protection pioneer! The grand opening concert will then take place back in the Stadthaus. And at least one composer's name evokes the theme of nature: Alfred Baum was the organist at Zurich's Neumünster Church and a piano teacher at the conservatories in Winterthur and Zurich. As an orchestral pianist, he regularly performed with the Stadtorchester Winterthur (Winterthur City Orchestra). Of his more than 400 works, only a few have been published, but his Concerto for Trumpet, Piano, Timpani, and Strings enjoyed a certain popularity in the 1960s and 70s, being recorded several times for CD productions. However, the other two works on this evening are considerably better known. Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 is one of only two piano concertos written in a minor key. The contrasts in expression between minor and major, between pure drama and peaceful romance, have reminded many listeners of the later Romantic era. Zoltán Kodály's Dances from Galánta are no less full of contrasts; slow and fast dance melodies alternate, building to a brilliant, spirited finale. Welcome to the 2026/27 season!
