program

Following his debut as a last-minute replacement with the Musikkollegium Winterthur last season, baritone Mikhail Timoshenko returns to Winterthur. This time, he is joined by his long-time duo partner, Elitsa Desseva, on piano. As outstanding interpreters of song, the two have made an international name for themselves; their meticulously conceived song programs have garnered numerous awards. Audiences can look forward to their interpretation of Schumann's famous "Dichterliebe" (Poet's Love): in this song cycle, the vocal and piano parts are equally important and intertwine. Despite the melancholy and profound sorrow that pervade the texts and music, a restrained optimism is often revealed in the extended piano interludes.

The songs of "Elegie" (Elegy), a major song cycle for baritone and chamber orchestra by the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, are also characterized by feelings of pain and loneliness. The music is largely somber and introspective: perhaps an exploration by the composer of his unhappy relationship with the pianist Mary de Senger – or rather a composed farewell to Romanticism, as the musical avant-garde moved into territory Schoeck no longer understood? The music does indeed respond to contemporary trends, such as those found in Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire"; all the more striking, then, is the final song, "Komm, Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht" (Come, Comfort of the World, Thou Silent Night), as it abandons the harmonic complexity of the preceding songs to find solace in a simple lullaby. Robert Schumann –

"Dichterliebe" (Poet's Love) Op. 48, song cycle after Heinrich Heine;
Othmar Schoeck – "Elegie" (Elegy) Op. 36, song cycle after poems by Nikolaus Lenau and Joseph von Eichendorff
