program
Free concerts have a long tradition at the Musikkollegium Winterthur: they have been running for over 150 years. The lunchtime concert series, now entering its third season, is not quite as steeped in history. This season's opening concert will be conducted by assistant conductor Nils-Erik Måseidvåg, who made his debut with the Musikkollegium Winterthur in a lunchtime concert last season.
On the program: two works with programmatic titles, whose content is, however, more ambiguous than one might expect. Gustav Mahler composed "Blumine" as part of the incidental music for "Der Trompeter von Säkkingen" (The Trumpeter of Säkkingen). The name, however, was only added when Mahler reused the piece for his first symphony – the original work was less about botany and more a serenade by the trumpeter Werner to his beloved Margareta. Even more open to interpretation is Mendelssohn's fourth symphony, nicknamed the "Italian." Do the dark gray tones of the second movement portray the dilapidated palaces of Venice, a poem by Goethe, or perhaps a pilgrim's melody? All the more vividly, then, does the audience experience the cheerfulness and lightheartedness of the outer movements, that joie de vivre that—then as now—is associated with Italy.
Program:
Gustav Mahler - "Blumine" Symphonic Movement for Orchestra
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 "Italian"
Performers:
Musikkollegium Winterthur
Nils Erik Måseidvåg - Conductor and Presenter
