Mozart had to abandon and restart his first concert in Vienna. Why? Mozart himself explains: because at the beginning of the concert, "the applause was endless." While it's impossible to say for certain which piano concerto he played on that April evening in 1781, it was almost certainly the E-flat major Concerto, K. 271, his newest and most spectacular. We can still imagine the effect it must have had: There was the surprisingly early entrance of the solo piano right at the start. Or the wonderfully operatic Andantino. Or the enormously virtuosic finale. To ignite this firework display of effects, you need someone to fill Mozart's shoes: Kristian Bezuidenhout is the perfect pianist, demonstrating equal sensitivity and musicality on both historical and modern instruments.

A good century after Mozart, another young, highly talented musician traveled to a metropolis: George Enescu, a Romanian violinist, pianist, and composer with Paris as his dream destination. And the concentration of astonishing skill and immense self-confidence that Mozart's Piano Concerto so clearly demonstrates is in no way less evident in Enescu's work. His String Octet of 1900 is stunning proof: the eight parts are just enough to capture the wealth of his ideas and demonstrate his polyphonic intricacy. This golden tapestry of sound unfolds over almost forty minutes. Anyone who doesn't know the piece should hear it at least once in their life.

Program:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271 "Jenamy"
- Intermission -
George Enescu - String Octet in C major, Op. 7
