The current season's theme, "Nature," takes Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, the "Pastoral," as its starting point. In keeping with Beethoven's dualistic conception of his works—he considered most of his symphonies to be pairs—it is only logical that the counterpart to the Sixth should also be performed. In contrast to the "Pastoral" with its expansive, sublime soundscapes, the Fifth thrives on its most consistent density. There,
programmatic nature painting; here, a heroic fervor reminiscent of the Sturm und Drang movement. When the breakthrough to radiant C major occurs in the fourth movement, a certain revelry is perfectly acceptable—it is no coincidence that Beethoven employs trombones for the first time in his symphonic output here. No less famous is the evening's concert piece, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. With its two distinctly lyrical themes, the first movement is more reminiscent of the "Pastoral" than of Beethoven's Fifth. But the leap from the slow waltz of the "Canzonetta" into the virtuosity of the finale is in no way inferior to that of the Fifth Symphony. Christoph Koncz opens this fast-paced concert evening with the overture to Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Incidentally, it is his only instrumental composition featuring trombones – though here they are entirely dedicated to the dignified temple scenes of the opera.
