Bogdan Božović & Alasdair Beatson

Winterthur concertmaster Bogdan Božović and Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson have already collaborated on numerous chamber music projects. In September 2024, they made their joint debut at the Stadthaus with sonatas by Bach. It is therefore only fitting that for their second joint project in Winterthur, the two have programmed works by the man who significantly shaped the Bach revival. When Felix Mendelssohn composed his Double Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Strings in 1823, he was just a boy of 14. Nevertheless, he had already written three other works for solo instrument and orchestral accompaniment at that time. After the first private performance in May 1823 with his violin teacher Eduard Rietz, he added wind and timpani parts, and a public performance at the Berlin Schauspielhaus followed later that same year. The work was never published during Mendelssohn's lifetime; its first publication only appeared in 1999.

A similar fate befell his third violin sonata in F major, which he composed in 1838: considered "bad" by Mendelssohn, it wasn't until 1953 that none other than Yehudi Menuhin discovered the manuscript and published it for the first time. The sonata captivates with a first movement of brilliant virtuosity and a feather-light rondo finale in which the perpetual motion of the refrain and the playful couplet theme create a lively interplay.
