program

And once again, a soloist from within our own ranks will grace the stage! This time it's Francesco Sica, principal second violin since 2023. In Ludwig van Beethoven's two Romances, he will have the opportunity to showcase his elegant playing and warm tone to perfection. The solo works will be framed by two opening pieces from stage works. The imperiously surging opening motif of the "Coriolan" Overture is contrasted by a restless string theme, symbolizing the emotional turmoil of the Roman protagonist. Salvatore Viganò's libretto and choreography for the Prometheus narrative have been lost, but Beethoven's musical numbers have survived; the overture, in particular, has provided a festive opening to many a concert evening. Following the theatrical and ballet music, film is also represented: with Per Nørgård's "Pastoral" from the hugely successful 1988 film "Babette's Feast," the "fifth art" also gets its due in this program… Joseph Haydn composed his Symphony No. 100 during his second trip to London, where it premiered in 1794 and was immediately received with enthusiasm. The nickname "Military" did not originate with Haydn and likely refers to the percussion instruments used in the second and fourth movements, which are reminiscent of so-called "Janissary music" (Turkish military bands). However, the audience at the premiere was probably more aware of the ongoing wars in France, which may have caused considerable excitement. Turbulent times – then as now.
