Suaves Voices
Founded in 2012 by Tobias Wicky, the ensemble consists of a core group of nine professional singers, most of whom have a connection to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis . The ensemble's size varies depending on the program, and instrumentalists are brought in as needed.
Their repertoire includes a wide selection of Italian madrigals, works from the early German Baroque, and larger-scale Italian oratorios and masses. In planning their programs, they ensure that, alongside works by renowned masters such as Monteverdi and Schütz, they also perform pieces by lesser-known composers like Domenico Sarro and Giovanni Croce.
Important performances have taken Voces Suaves to the Festival d'Ambronay, the Monteverdi Festival Cremona, the Seviqc Brežice Festival in Slovenia, and the FAMB Basel (Forum für Alte Musik Basel). From 2014 to 2016, the ensemble participated in the European funding program "eeemerging, Emerging European Ensembles Project," which supported the ensemble's artistic development.
In spring 2016, claves records released the ensemble's first CD, entitled Mass & Psalms op. 36 by Maurizio Cazzati; this was the world's first recording of this work, produced in cooperation with RISM Switzerland (Répertoire International des Sources Musicales).
Voces Suaves was significantly shaped by Francesco Saverio Pedrini, who served as musical director from 2012 to 2015. The ensemble actively participated in the three-year concert series Le Capitali della Musica, which was initiated and directed by Pedrini. Each concert by Le Capitali della Musica was dedicated to a musical center of the Italian Renaissance or Baroque period and its most important composers.
