Bern University of the Arts
The HKB has existed since September 1, 2003. It was formed from the merger of the Bern University of Music and Theatre (HMT) and the Bern University of the Arts (HGKK). The HKB is a department of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH).
The HKB is committed to quality. Students are selected through entrance examinations, and lecturers through high qualifications. The manageable size of the institution allows for excellent student support and high-quality education.
HKB students are firmly rooted in their respective disciplines. At the same time, they see themselves as part of an innovative, interdisciplinary art, design, and research landscape. This close proximity to other disciplines broadens their horizons. The acquisition of interdisciplinary skills guarantees sustainable professional qualifications at the university level.
The Institute for Transdisciplinarity Y coordinates this interdisciplinary learning. The writer and physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg coined the aphorism: "He who understands nothing but chemistry, doesn't even truly understand that." Hanns Eisler adapted this statement to music. For the Bern University of the Arts (HKB), it serves as a guiding principle in an even broader sense.
As a research institute and event organizer, the HKB collaborates closely with national and international partners from the cultural, economic, and social sectors.
Large-scale projects such as the Bern Biennale and the Bern Music Festival. With its strong public presence, the HKB distinguishes itself from other educational institutions and is a vibrant part of the cultural scene in the Swiss capital.
