Academic Orchestra Basel
For nearly 120 years, the letters aob have stood for the joy of making music. The Academic Orchestra Basel was founded in 1899 by five students of the University of Basel and has long been open to all music lovers from the cross-border Regio Basiliensis.
The aob is a symphony orchestra comprised primarily of amateur musicians. We are under professional direction and committed to high musical and technical standards. We cultivate the symphonic repertoire and regularly perform lesser-known works from various eras and contemporary compositions. We engage qualified soloists and offer emerging talents the opportunity to perform with an orchestra. Since 2016, the aob has been led by Ivan Wassilevski as its artistic director.
The aob is an independent association financed by membership fees, concert revenues, engagements, and donations. The aob is interested in collaborating with choirs and other musical ensembles and is open to participating in experimental projects.
