Wilhelm Schmid, born in 1953 in Bavarian Swabia, lives as a freelance philosopher in Berlin. He studied philosophy and history in Berlin, Paris, and Tübingen, earning his doctorate and habilitation on the art of living. Until retirement, he taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Erfurt, was a visiting lecturer in Riga and Tbilisi, and worked as a philosophical counselor near Zurich. In 2012, he received the Meckatzer Philosophy Prize, and in 2013, the Egnér Prize. His books have been translated into numerous languages. Many people seek a positive, happy life. There's nothing wrong with that. But life itself often gets in the way, with negative, unhappy, and unsuccessful moments. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge this? The philosopher Wilhelm Schmid helps us understand the art of living: learning to enjoy life while simultaneously enduring the unenjoyable. Happiness grows most readily as a happiness of abundance, when we accept both sides, the joyful and the difficult experiences.
