Everyone wanted to write something for this violinist: Anne-Sophie Mutter's artistry has inspired the finest contemporary composers to create new works. The Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki has written four scores for her. It began in 1995 with his great Second Violin Concerto: Metamorphoses, as the title suggests, explores transformation and reshaping in its six movements—a oscillation between different states of mind, or even between tradition and modernity. Mutter admits that, interpretively, this concerto is "a physical and psychological challenge that I gratefully accept." Alongside her is the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, one of the finest American ensembles. Under the direction of its chief conductor, Manfred Honeck, the orchestra performs Antonín Dvořák's exhilarating Symphony From the New World in the second half, a work that represents the archetype of a musical "American Dream." For with this work, Dvořák was to show the USA the way to the promised land of classical music, with a distinctly American musical language. This is why he also incorporates spirituals, melodies, and dance rhythms of the indigenous population into his Ninth Symphony.
