Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra | Manfred Honeck | Alexandre Kantorow | Brahms | Shostakovich

Everyone is clamoring for him right now: Alexandre Kantorow, the pianist born in 1997, who seven years ago became the first Frenchman to win the gold medal at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition and in 2023 received the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award. He has already performed with world-class orchestras such as the Berlin and New York Philharmonics, played Ravel's Jeux d'eau in pouring rain at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and captivates audiences with his poetic interpretations. Kantorow makes his Lucerne Festival debut with one of his favorite composers, Johannes Brahms, whose First Piano Concerto seems to have been written for eleven or twelve fingers, so challenging is it. But Kantorow fears neither the full-bodied chords nor the delicate passagework. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck then present a milestone of the Russian repertoire: Dmitri Shostakovich's ambiguous Fifth Symphony. With this work, Shostakovich, when he was pilloried by Stalin's "guardians of culture," attempted to extricate himself from the firing line and wrote a bombastic, celebratory finale. But the true message lies between the lines.
