program

Antonín Dvořák's Stabat Mater, Op. 58.
Following the death of his daughter Josefa shortly after her birth in 1875, Dvořák began a rough draft of the "Stabat Mater" six months later, but it wasn't until 1877, after the tragic deaths of a second daughter and a son, that he began its complete and orchestrated version. It's conceivable that the lifelong devout Catholic sought solace for himself and his wife in working with this deeply personal text, creating a masterpiece that continues to move us today.

Dvořák's "Stabat Mater" is considered the first major Czech sacred work, and it was with this work in his repertoire that Dvořák traveled to London for the first time in 1884 at the invitation of the composer. The performance was a resounding success and established his fame in England.
