Johann Sebastian Bach masterfully employs musical devices such as harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation to dramatically amplify the biblical events; the St. John Passion is shorter and more concentrated in expression than the St. Matthew Passion, but by no means less profound! It makes the drama of the events and the emotional turmoil palpable – and touches the listener through its human intimacy as much as through its musical grandeur.
