program
tour, led by historian Father Dr. Thomas Fässler from the monastic community, delves into pivotal days in the monastery's history.
Five hundred years ago, a profound silence descended upon Einsiedeln Abbey: the monastic community had dwindled to a single, 86-year-old abbot. The end of this venerable pilgrimage site seemed inevitable. But the people of Schwyz recognized the monastery's importance and appealed to the Abbot of St. Gallen for help. On August 15, 1526, Ludwig Blarer was installed as the new abbot. Under his leadership, the silence gave way to renewed life, and Einsiedeln remained a place of spiritual retreat and pilgrimage. The world around us was also changing during this period: Europe discovered new horizons, and science and art entered an era of new beginnings. The music of this time reflects these tensions: it is meditation and insight at once, number and sound, devotion and research – an art that oscillates between contemplation and innovation.
*The concert takes place as part of the celebrations for the anniversary year 1526-2026. A guided tour at 3:45 p.m. in the Abbey Library invites you to an exhibition that focuses on the monastery's revival in 1526. Many of the pieces on display are being shown to the public for the very first time. Advance booking for the tour is required.
