The debut recital by the young, up-and-coming pianist Manoush Toth combines three works full of wit, humor, and lightness. Francis Poulenc's Soirées de Nazelles was composed from 1930 onwards during cozy evenings in the Touraine region at the country house of his friend Virginie Liénard (1845–1935), whom he referred to as "Auntie," and whose witty character is expressed in Variation 8.
Robert Schumann's Faschingsschwank is, overall, a cheerful work with a spirited opening movement, a sentimental romance, a colorful scherzino, a compelling and passionate intermezzo, and a fiery finale.
Beethoven's Sonata in G major, composed in 1798/99, exhibits a similarly lighthearted character, with its carefree, lyrical opening movement, the Andante with its variations on a march in which toy figures rather than actual soldiers are embodied, and the rhythmically playful scherzo finale.
