program
In the West, paradise appears as a place of perfection and innocence, for which humankind yearns. In the Romantic era, it became the symbol of an unattainable ideal, which lives on in longing and melancholy.
In the East, however, paradise often lies in the moment itself: in the splendor of the cherry blossom, in the reflection of the moon, in the gentle rustling of the wind. Here, beauty arises precisely from transience – the fleeting nature of the ideal is its magic.
Thus, East and West meet in this concert: in song, in poetry – as different yet related paths to paradise.
Music by Franz Schubert (1797–1828), Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847), Gustav Mahler (1860–1911), Franz Liszt (1811–1886), Hugo Wolf (1860–1903), Kosaku Yamada (1886–1965), Yoshinao Nakata (1923–2000), and Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996).
