Op. 16.

The evening opens with three minuets by Giacomo Puccini – originally
conceived for string quartet, exquisitely
illuminated in Matthias Arter's orchestral arrangement. From this chamber music gesture emerges a large-scale
dialogue: Anastasia Kobekina, one of the most sought-after cellists of her
generation, guides the audience through Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with a light touch,
clear lines, and palpable joy in playing.
After the intermission, Brahms's Hungarian Dances, in a version for cello and orchestra arranged by Kobekina, offer
a fresh perspective on familiar
melodies. Finally, Brahms' Serenade No. 2 in A major, Op. 16, unfolds
its warm, distinctive sound: the unusual instrumentation without violins
creates space for luminous woodwind colors, expansive viola bows, and a
velvety foundation from the lower strings.
The Basel Chamber Orchestra stands for artistic versatility and stylistically
aware sound culture – from historically informed performance to contemporary. Anastasia
Kobekina, recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award 2024, among other accolades, combines
technical brilliance with inquisitive musicality.
