program

When Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit perform together, one experiences music history in a personal, firsthand way. Both will have their grand appearance at the anniversary gala: Martha Argerich with Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Charles Dutoit conducting the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in Stravinsky's Petrushka.

The anniversary gala honors two extraordinary artistic biographies. Martha Argerich will celebrate her 85th birthday in 2026 and has been a key figure at Le Piano Symphonique since 2024 as its "Associate Pianist." Charles Dutoit, in turn, will celebrate his 90th birthday in October 2026. The Lausanne-born conductor has been one of the most influential international interpreters of the French and Russian repertoire for decades.

Argerich and Dutoit share a personal history as well as an artistic one. At the anniversary gala, they will meet in Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, a work in which the pianist can unleash her unmistakable blend of passion, freedom, and poetry.

A piece of music history that reaches even further back is Igor Stravinsky's Petrushka, conducted by Charles Dutoit. Born in Lausanne in 1936, the conductor once studied with Ernest Ansermet, who himself was closely associated with the French-Russian ballet tradition. When Dutoit conducts Petrushka with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, a resounding line of tradition becomes audible, stretching from Stravinsky's ballet world through Ansermet to the present day.
