The Schola Cantorum Basilliensis delivers the most charming satire on the opera world to close the festival with their performance of "La Critica." "
La Critica" is more than just a charming satire on the operatic establishment—it is a resounding testament to European cultural exchange in the 18th century. Jommelli himself worked not only in Italy but also at German courts such as Ludwigsburg, bringing Italian operatic tradition into dialogue with French taste and German orchestral culture. His music exemplifies a time when composers, singers, and impresarios naturally moved between countries and styles.
The opera's characters also reflect this mobility: a seconda donna posing as French, ambitious virtuosos, traveling poets, and impresarios—all move within an international theatrical cosmos where identities are fluid and careers transcend borders.
