For the writer Joseph Roth, the soul of old Austria lay neither in Vienna nor in the valleys of Tyrol, but on the periphery of the Habsburg Empire: in the Slavic villages or the Galician shtetls, for example. While the Viennese-born Franz Schubert created throughout his life from the heart of the Dual Monarchy, Hugo Wolf and Gustav Mahler (from Slovenia and Moravia, respectively) exemplified this periphery of the soul. Massimiliano Matesic's suite is intended as a small homage to this lost world.
