Christmas brought with it a veritable marathon of church services for Bach and his Thomanerchor. No wonder he designed the opening chorus of the chorale cantata BWV 133, intended for the third day of Christmas in 1724, to be decidedly accessible, at least in the choral parts. Yet how much radiant joy of the Nativity pervades this movement and the entire cantata, which, in text and music, makes "hearing" the "sweet" message the royal road to a sensual understanding of God! And what warmth and intimacy can be discerned in the two arias, in which Bach comfortingly humanizes this "incomprehensible being."
