program
In Bach's time, faith founded on Jesus could hardly have been expressed more confessionally than with Christian Keymann's powerful hymn. Yet it is not only the opening chorus of the cantata BWV 124, situated in a subtly radiant E major, that eschews any gestures of triumph. The inner movements, in particular, embark on an introspective journey of the soul, which, with the overcoming of the fear of death and the coming to terms with the particularly painful departure of Jesus after the joy of Epiphany, presents true trials. Heaven, however, does not come without a price – what radical renunciation of the world can mean is given provocatively catchy form in the soprano-alto duet.
With a reflection on the cantata text by Jean-Daniel Strub.
