The Zurich Chamber Orchestra is delighted to welcome the charismatic pianist Jan Lisiecki to its ensemble. The young Canadian proves that there is still something new to say about Beethoven's concertos. His playing displays great determination; it is intense and sonorous, wonderfully transparent, beautiful in tone, and expressive.
Ludwig van Beethoven was also an excellent pianist and a master of improvisation. It is therefore no surprise that he often sat at the piano himself as soloist in performances of his piano works. This was also the case at the premiere of his Third Piano Concerto on April 5, 1803, in Vienna. With Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Beethoven broke free from some of the influences of his formative years under Joseph Haydn. Moreover, he defied the expectations placed on him in Vienna as "Mozart's successor." Beethoven revealed his true colors. The critics were stunned, the audience cheered. Vienna had never heard such cheeky sounds before!
