program
Hypocrisy and a self-serving sense of mission have permeated the history of politics and religion for millennia – Bach's cantata "See that your fear of God is not hypocrisy" BWV 179, developed along the lines of the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, serves as a timelessly compelling warning. Beyond some zealous Baroque imagery, the text and music embody the advice for salutary humility and appropriate self-examination. That Bach later transformed the admonitory opening chorus into the Kyrie prayer of his Missa brevis in G major, BWV 236, could therefore not be more fitting.
