program
In the 500th anniversary year of the revival of Einsiedeln Abbey, its music library invites you to a special event: On Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., a novel form of guided tour will take place in the abbey's magnificent Baroque Hall – a room born from the creative vision of the Einsiedeln lay brother and Baroque architect Caspar Moosbrugger.
The focus will be on the fascinating, almost two-hundred-year history of the music library's development. Visitors will be guided musically through those eras and works whose composers are represented in the library's holdings with manuscripts or first editions. This is a concert-style tour – likely unique in the region – presented with visuals and sound, and aims to highlight the synergies between various departments of the abbey and regional institutions.
The program follows the history of the music library and therefore encompasses diverse styles – from Gregorian chant through Classical and Romantic periods to works by composers still active at the monastery today. Among others, compositions by J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, J. Brahms, C.D. Cossoni, P. Theo Flury OSB, G.B. Sammartini, and J. Christian Bach will be performed.
For those who wish, the experience will be twofold: afterwards, a wine tasting from the monastery's own cellar awaits you. Weather permitting, it will take place in the kitchen garden; otherwise, in the courtyard refectory. Five to six different wines will be presented especially for this occasion by our oenologist, Dominik Mathies, and his team.
