GRAND PRE-CHRISTMAS GALA
An extraordinary evening with distinguished guests and music of the highest caliber

MEGGEN St. Charles Hall | FRI 27 November | 7:30 PM

Intimacy, operatic drama, and virtuosity
Here the song, there the grand opera stage, and in between, virtuoso instrumental music. The evening combines the intimacy of song with the splendor of opera, and love resonates again and again as a leitmotif.

Schubert's settings of Goethe's poems range from the introspective "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" (Only he who knows longing) to the dramatic ballad "Erlkönig" (The Erlking). Beethoven, Rossini, Bottesini, and Proto take up operatic melodies and transform them into brilliant chamber music. The heart of the evening is Brahms's "Zwei Gesänge" (Two Songs) for mezzo-soprano, cello, and piano: chamber music of rare intimacy and profound personal expression.

The grand finale is an aria from Bizet's "Carmen" in an arrangement commissioned especially for this evening for mezzo-soprano, piano, cello, and double bass.

Four musicians, all at home on international stages, will perform in a rarely heard ensemble: mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis, cellist Joel Marosi, double bassist David Desimpelaere, and pianist Marian Rosenfeld.

An extraordinary evening with distinguished guests and music of the highest caliber, benefiting the concert series "Abendbier zum Klavier" (Evening Beer with Piano) and "Musik & Geist" (Music & Spirit) (under the umbrella of the association "Klassik und Kultur für einen lebendigen Alltag" [Classical Music and Culture for a Vibrant Everyday Life]).

Proceeds will go directly towards future concerts and help ensure the long-term sustainability of our events.

Ticket price: CHF 150 per person (CHF 50 for the association).
