She launched her career with Robert Schumann. Six years ago, Johanna Summer released her debut album, Schumann Kaleidoskop, on which she further developed the Romantic composer's ideas through improvisation: his pieces became "standards" for spontaneous pianistic excursions somewhere between classical and jazz. Now, Summer turns her attention to Dichterliebe (Poet's Love), but in her late-night concert she also responds to the new compositions of this song cycle by Christian Jost and Jörg Widmann, which will be performed in the preceding concert. In Dichterliebe, there are "many moments in which one seems to be in a kind of liminal space, between dream and reality," Summer explains. "Will Schumann dare to leap into a different tonality, or will he linger a moment longer in the current atmosphere? Similar tensions constantly occupy me when improvising: Is an emotion best expressed with a specific classical vocabulary? Or has a groove just established itself that supports Schumann's musical gesture, perhaps even enriching it with timbres from other musical cultures?"
