Music Education for Children:
How do you get children excited about the fascinating world of classical music? At our family concerts, it's primarily the parents or grandparents who introduce their children to it. But what access do children have whose families have never experienced a concert? This is where schools can play a role. With the Young ZKO program, we collaborate with the Office for School Culture and enable two classes to explore the world of classical music and its surrounding orchestra over a two-year period. This includes a behind-the-scenes look at orchestral operations, with opportunities for direct interaction between children and musicians.
Regular reciprocal visits are encouraged – both in the classroom and in the concert hall, as well as at the ZKO headquarters. The "Open House" morning is particularly popular, during which the students participate in an exciting series of activities to learn about both the orchestra and its administrative processes. The highlight of the Young ZKO program is the final concert, which is conceived and designed by the children themselves. Supported by music educator Evamaria Felder, drama teacher Laurin Moor, and composer Stefan Koch, the children write texts, design the stage set, and even compose their own musical pieces. At the end of the season, they finally stand together with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra on the stage of the ZKO House, celebrating the crowning achievement of an inspiring and intensive collaboration.
