When Avi Avital performs in our city, the mandolin takes center stage—an instrument rarely given such prominence in the concert hall. He is joined by the British conductor Hugo Dicciati and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Dicciati is one of the most adventurous musicians of his generation.
His genre-crossing, innovative programs, which often blend musical traditions with innovative soundscapes, have garnered international acclaim. This evening, the classical concert is juxtaposed with the shimmering soundscapes of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel in arrangements of their string quartets. Jonny Greenwood's music for "There Will Be Blood," with its plucked and pizzicato sounds, also makes a surprising addition. After the intermission, the program includes Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 49 (2nd and 4th movements)—passionate and rich in contrasts—before the evening concludes in the French chason style with Edith Piaf's "La vie en rose."
