The Abendmusiken (Evening Music) were a legendary concert series organized by Dieterich Buxtehude in Lübeck. Even Johann Sebastian Bach traveled on foot from a great distance to attend these concerts of sacred and instrumental music, where he met the master Buxtehude, the most famous organist in Europe. These impressions were formative for the young Bach and had a direct impact on his cantata composition. A musical arc of gripping intensity unfolds between heartfelt supplication and hope, culminating in J.S. Bach's first surviving cantata, BWV 4.
